Integrated PTE Core tasks worth checking first
This is an evidence-based shortlist, not an official weight ranking. Question ranges and scoring methods come from Pearson’s 2026 Score Guide.

Most important PTE Core tasks in 2026
Pearson publishes question ranges, scoring methods, assessed skills and scoring traits for all 19 task types, but not one universal weight ranking. Use the official facts together with the target CLB gap and personal performance.
Repeat Sentence has the largest official item range
The 2026 Score Guide lists 10–12 Repeat Sentence items. RS uses partial credit and contributes to listening and speaking through content, pronunciation and fluency, but Pearson does not publish it as a guaranteed fixed-percentage weight.
PTE Core integrated-skill tasks
Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Answer Short Question, Summarize Written Text, Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks, Summarize Spoken Text, Listening Fill in the Blanks, Highlight Incorrect Words and Write from Dictation contribute to two communicative skills.
RA, RS and WFD serve different score gaps
Read Aloud connects reading and speaking, Repeat Sentence connects listening and speaking, and Write from Dictation connects listening and writing. Choose among them from the required four-skill result instead of copying another candidate’s ranking.
Tasks with incorrect-option deductions
Reading Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers; Listening Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers; and Highlight Incorrect Words deduct points for incorrect selections, with a minimum task score of zero. Avoid selecting every option without evidence.
Form and word-count rules can cause avoidable losses
Summarize Written Text, Write Email and Summarize Spoken Text have explicit form ranges in the official guide. Learn these rules before spending extra time on templates or vocabulary.
Start with the required score in every skill
Write down the target for speaking, listening, reading and writing. For Canadian immigration, use the official program requirement and CLB table instead of an overall-score goal.
Measure a baseline across all 19 task types
Record accuracy, timing and repeated errors from representative practice. Do not rank a task from its name alone: check how you actually perform under its response and scoring rules.
Find tasks connected to the largest skill gap
If speaking and listening are both below target, Repeat Sentence may become efficient practice. If listening and writing are weak, compare Summarize Spoken Text, Listening Fill in the Blanks and Write from Dictation. For example, after a WFD attempt, compare a missing word ending with the audio and text: if you missed the sound, practise listening to that ending; if you heard it but typed it incorrectly, practise the spelling. Recheck that error in later attempts rather than treating it as a predicted score.
Fix avoidable scoring losses
Learn word-count and form rules for summary and email tasks. In multiple-answer questions and Highlight Incorrect Words, avoid guessing every option because the official scoring method deducts for incorrect selections.
Recalculate the order after each cycle
Keep core familiarity with every task, but move extra time toward the current bottleneck. Update the priority from new accuracy, timing, saved mistakes and mock evidence instead of preserving a permanent list.
Do not skip the remaining task types
A PTE Core test contains 52–67 tasks across all 19 types. Maintain basic workflow and scoring knowledge for every type while allocating extra practice to the current bottleneck.
