What PTE Core is
PTE Core is Pearson Test of English Core, a computer-based English test completed at a test centre. It assesses listening, speaking, reading and writing through everyday English rather than an academic-study context.
Who uses PTE Core in Canada
The Government of Canada currently lists PTE Core for Express Entry language results. Candidates should still verify the exact test, minimum CLB level, score validity and eligibility rules for their own immigration or citizenship pathway.
PTE Core format, duration and task types
The test takes about two hours at a secure test centre and runs in this order: Speaking and Writing, Reading, then Listening. Pearson currently presents 7 scored Speaking and Writing question types, 5 Reading types and 7 Listening types.
Scores, CLB targets and preparation
PTE Core reports an overall score and four communicative skill scores on a 10–90 scale. IRCC requirements apply to individual skills, so compare each score with the correct CLB target rather than converting the overall result.
Official and independent PTE Core preparation
Pearson Smart Prep contains free and paid official resources for format calibration. Lengqishui provides independent free daily practice, listening review, mock-test flow and learning feedback, but does not issue official scores or reproduce Pearson’s private scoring engine.

Understand what appears in each section, which skills a task assesses, whether it uses partial credit and how much time the current public format allocates.
Understand the Score Report before setting a target
Learn the 10–90 overall and four-skill scores, integrated task contributions and why the overall score is not the arithmetic average of the four communicative skills.
Turn the programme requirement into four skill targets
Set the required CLB target separately for Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. Do not convert the overall PTE Core score into one CLB level.
Use official preparation for format calibration
Pearson’s Smart Prep contains free and paid resources, including guided practice, video courses and test tips. Use official material to confirm the current interface and task expectations.
Use daily practice to fix one observable weakness
Practise focused question types, review audio or written evidence and compare progress across several attempts. Third-party AI feedback remains learning guidance, not an official score.
Take a realistic mock after learning the interfaces
