The maximum PTE Core score is 90 on a 10–90 scale
Pearson reports the overall score and each Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing communicative skill score from 10 to 90. The highest possible score is 90.
PTE Core has no universal passing score
The required result depends on the immigration program or receiving organisation. Canadian immigration pathways commonly apply a separate CLB requirement to each language skill.
The overall score is not the arithmetic average of four skills
Pearson calculates the overall result across the complete test rather than averaging the four communicative skill scores. Integrated tasks such as Repeat Sentence and Write From Dictation can contribute to two skills.
How the 19 PTE Core task types are scored
Pearson uses correct-or-incorrect scoring, credit per correct response, blank, sequence or word, and trait-based partial credit such as content, form, pronunciation, oral fluency, grammar, vocabulary and spelling. Multiple-choice multiple-answer tasks can deduct incorrect selections, but not every task uses negative marking.
IRCC requires the individual skill scores and Pearson states that the overall PTE Core score cannot be converted to CLB. Compare Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing separately, then use practice feedback only to plan further learning.
